Authors: Sherry Aine Te & Kyle Turner The Arctic crew in the Tzortziou Bio-Optics lab packing for gears, equipment and supplies (August 6, 2021). On August 10th, the Tzortziou Bio-Optics group will be voyaging to Alaska’s North Slope for a 3-week field expedition in the coastal Arctic... “The Arctic has been warming faster than any other region on the planet, and its marine life - from plankton to whales - is increasingly forced to adapt to a new ‘normal’" said Dr. Tzortziou. This field expedition, a multi-agency collaboration between the Naval Research Center, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, the International Arctic Research Center, and City College of New York, will result in new measurements and satellite algorithms for improved characterization of environmental change in Arctic coastal aquatic ecosystems.
For 18 days, the team, including Tzortziou Lab research technician Kyle Turner, PhD student Alana Menendez and undergraduate assistant Krystian Kopka, will be immersed in a remote environment extending from coastal habitat accessible via oilfield roads in Prudhoe Bay to the Colville, Kuparuk, and Sagavanirktok estuaries and the Arctic Ocean. The length and the unique environmental conditions of the field work calls for thorough preparation for the trip. Kyle’s expert tip: Proper preparation and packing for a trip to the Arctic is a crucial step for a successful voyage! He shared his insights on the upcoming trip to Alaska -- which aims to inspire fellow scientists when preparing for field work duties. Kyle’s packing and prep checklist:
Kyle hopes for smooth sailing, successful measurements and water sampling, and that the supplies and samples will remain intact in transit from Alaska back to New York City. Despite the demanding trip preparations, the team is elated for an exciting journey after a long travel shutdown, rekindling their sense of adventure!
